Some Weakened Gödelian Ontological Systems

چکیده

We describe a KB Gödelian ontological system, and some other weak systems, in a fully formal way using theory of types and natural deduction, and present a completeness proof in its main and specific parts. We technically and philosophically analyze and comment on the systems (mainly with respect to the relativism of values) and include a sketch of some connected aspects of Gödel’s relation

On the Entropy Flow between Parts of Multi-component Systems, Partial Entropies and the Implications for Observations

The concept of the time dependent instantaneously occupied phase space volume is applied to multi-component systems. It allows for the investigation of entropy flows betweeen the components of the system and the evaluation of partial entropies assigned to the subsystems. We give numerical examples by means of molecular dynamics simulations of a 100-particle gas. Using a symplectic exactly rever...

Ontological individualism reconsidered

The thesis of methodological individualism in social science is commonly divided into two different claims – explanatory individualism and ontological individualism. Ontological individualism is the thesis that facts about individuals exhaustively determine social facts. Initially taken to be a claim about the identity of groups with sets of individuals or their properties, ontological individu...

A History of Interactions between Logic and Number Theory

I concentrate on logic and number theory, and the evolution of this interaction. The period under review is 1929-2003, beginning with Presburger’s work [89]) on the metamathematics of addition and order on Z. Presburger’s work was published two years before the dramatic discoveries of Gödel, which revealed the ubiquity of undecidability and incompleteness in global arithmetic. Presburger showed...

A refutation of Penrose's Gödelian case against artificial intelligence

Having, as it is generally agreed, failed to destroy the computational conception of mind with the Gödelian attack he articulated in his The Emperor’s New Mind, Penrose has returned, armed with a more elaborate and more fastidious Gödelian case, expressed in Chapters 2 and 3 of his Shadows of the Mind. The core argument in these chapters is enthymematic, and when formalized, a remarkable number...

Death, treatment decisions and the permanent vegetative state: evidence from families and experts

Some brain injured patients are left in a permanent vegetative state, i.e., they have irreversibly lost their capacity for consciousness but retained some autonomic physiological functions, such as breathing unaided. Having discussed the controversial nature of the permanent vegetative state as a diagnostic category, we turn to the question of the patients' ontological status. Are the permanent...
